GESTURES   is any act of the speaker that reinforce or demonstrate ideas
                         We may use any parts of our body particularly the face, head, shoulder ,arms and hands

BASIC HAND GESTURES
1.      Palm-up Gesture – this is the affirmative or giving or receiving gesture
2.      Palm-down Gesture - this is the negative or rejecting gesture
3.      Index-finger Gesture – this is the pointing gesture
4.      Clenched Fist Gesture – this is the emphatic gesture or one that denotes force and power

   NOTE : Palm gesture are formed with the fingers reasonably close  together with the thumbs a little apart from the fingers

                                      KINDS OF GESTURES CLASSIFIED AS TO FUNCTION:

  1. Locative Gestures – point out person , place or things within the sight of the listeners or within the imagination.
  2. Picturing Gesture – describe or demonstrate objects ,ideas, action.
  3. Emphatic Gesture – stress  or emphasizes ideas.
  4.  Suggestive Gesture – stimulate the imagination of the listeners.

STEPS OF A GESTURE

  1. The Approach – which is the movement of the hands from the sides of the body to the place where the stoke  will be made.
  2. The Stroke – which is the gesture proper.
  3. The Return – which is the movement of the hand from the place where the stoke is made back to the sides of the body.

PRINCIPLES OF GOOD GESTURES

  1. Integration - the gesture must suit the idea it supports.
  2. Coordination – the  gesture must be harmonized with the other parts of the body.
  3. Timing – the gesture must be timed  to the word it supports
  4. Control – the gesture must be well-controlled
  5. Definiteness – the gesture must be precise.
  6. Variety – the gesture must be varied.
